Sketch Theatre has hosted more than 120 artists worldwide as they create original pieces on camera. The videos, time lapsed and set to mood matching music, include talents from a variety of art backgrounds including traditional, comics, digital visual effects, entertainment and even tattooing. LA, its Wed night… want to see some art?

My old school pal Eric Yahnker is currently riding that wave of unstoppable popularity (he was last month’s cover artist for Juxtapoz) and tonight he is featured in a group show opening in Culver City. Get out there, and expand the senses 🙂

FACEMAKER (a group show)

Yahnker-Facemaker

Royal/T
8910 Washington Blvd
Culver City, CA 90232

Tonight at Royal/T in Culver City, Ben Jones, Shepard Fairey, Takashi Murakami, Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, Eric Yahnker, Jane Moseley, Olaf Breuning, and others will explore interpretations of the most universal element of human perception: the face.

Kathy Grayson of The Hole NYC is curating the show. And, as you may know now, Yahnker is our May 2011 issue cover artist, and Olaf Breuning has a 14-page feature. The show opens at 8PM.

“The exhibit explores the inherent tendency to see faces in all objects, which drives each artist to re-imagine the basic figure—whether idiosyncratic, fragmented, collaged, psychological, or geometric. With works from several New York and West Coast-based graffiti artists as well as those from The Hole, all the pieces on display—for the first time ever at Royal/T—will be for sale throughout the duration of the exhibit.”

Featured in the show are works from contemporary young artists including the title piece by Ben Jones, in addition to Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, Joe Grillo, assume vivid astro focus, Tomoo Gokita, Eric Yahnker, Jane Moseley, Olaf Breuning, KAWS, Ted Mineo, David Shrigley, Shepard Fairey, Eddie Martinez, Taylor McKimens, Francine, Speigel, Avery Newman, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Robert Lazzarini, Aurel Schmidt, Kembra Pfahler, Rivas & Tullie, Aaron Johnson, Brian Belott, Matt Leines, SWOON, Allison Schulnik, Clare Rojas, Jules de Balincourt, Michael Williams, Takeshi Murata, Anders Oinonen, Justin Samson, Misaki Kawai, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Dennis Tyfus, Katherine Bernhardt, Todd James, Matt Greene, Stefan Bondell, Spencer Sweeney, Nate Lowman, Mat Brinkman, Jakub Julian Ziolkowski, Billy Grant, Adam Tullie and FriendsWithYou.

Early influences, the films of Winsor McCay

Ain’t it Cool News recently dug some pretty good gems out of the History of Animation Archives, here is a brief introduction to the grandfather of animation Winsor McCay, with a glimpse of what could be considered the first known sketching video of all time! Little Nemo from 1911.

incidentally, Brad Bird recently received the The Winsor McCay Award via the 38th annual Annie Awards, he wasn’t present to receive said honor – and here’s why.

One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books and television. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie “Supersize Me,” and Abraham Obama, the fusion of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents, an image widely discussed in the media as directly impacting the 2008 election. Other characters carousing through English’s art, in paintings, billboards, and sculpture include three-eyed rabbits, udderly delicious cowgirls and grinning skulls, blending stunning visuals with the bitingly humorous undertones of America’s Premier Pop Iconoclast.
